Grocery Shopping and Meal Plan – June 27

Whew, all the birthdays are finally over. I made my cookies and my cakes and my cupcakes, those cakes and the frosting took me all weekend! I think they turned out pretty good though, especially for never having made a cake before.

I made four 8-inch cakes that turned out pretty flat, then I leveled the tops and stuck two pairs together with chocolate frosting. Then I drew out the face with premade frosting in white, black and orange. I then made homemade buttercream frosting (using this recipe) and colored it bright red.

Using a grass frosting tip, I covered the rest of the cake in red frosting. For two dozen cupcakes and two cakes, I used one and a half batches of buttercream. I’m pretty impressed with the way they came out and I got rave compliments.

Since I was so busy this week, I completely forgot to make a meal plan again, though I did make a short list of things I needed and were on sale. I guess I’m winging it again this week. Next month we’re taking my mother-in-law to Aldi to show it to her, must spread the word!

Total for the week: 69.52

Meal plan:

None! But I have chicken to cook as well as the salmon from last week, plus pasta and some frozen ground turkey. We’ll see how winging it goes for another week. I made Scallops and Orzo on Sunday night.

Grocery Shopping and Meal Plan – June 20

I am going to be pretty busy this week! On Wednesday my mother-in-law is picking me up to go to our nephew’s birthday party, and then Sunday is the birthday party for our twin baby nephews. I have to make chocolate chip cookies for the first party and then I’m making two eight-inch cakes and two dozen cupcakes, Elmo themed, for the second party. That’s a ton of baking. And have I mentioned I have never made a cake before?

I mean, I’ve baked one, and I’ve even frosted a cake before. But I have never baked professional-looking cakes with layers and actual decorations before. I made a test run of the cupcakes to practice using a piping bag, and it went really well, so fingers crossed the cakes will turn out good too.

Anyway, on with your regularly scheduled food post!

Aldi haul:

  • Chicken sausage – $2.99
  • Ground turkey – $3.29
  • Gallon of milk – $1.49 (I was going to buy a half gallon, but it was $1.59. What?)
  • Lactose free milk – $2.79

  • Orange juice – $2.09 (trying to save money on my husband’s weekly OJ purchase)
  • Strawberry protein bars – $3.99
  • Oatmeal raisin bars – $1.49
  • Butter spray – $1.49 (for cakes)
  • Avocado – $0.79

I’m upset about this Shaw’s haul. They were running a sale of buying 10 mixed items and getting them all for $0.79 each. As I was reviewing my receipt for this post, I noticed that for some reason, I didn’t get that sale price. I shop very carefully and check price tags and count and I was hoping that I bought enough of the items to qualify, but clearly something went wrong. These items were supposed to be $0.79 each:

  • 2 cans of pineapple chunks – $1 each
  • Pasta – $1
  • Pasta sauce – $1
  • Quinoa – $1.25
  • 5 bags of frozen vegetables – $1 for onions, $1.25 for all others

Rest of haul:

  • English muffins – $2.99
  • Cooking wine – $3.29
  • Orange juice – $3.49
  • Shredded cheese – $0.99 each
  • Corn – $1.50
  • Lemons – $0.75 each (usually $0.69)
  • Deli cheese – $3.02
  • Deli chicken – $5.24
  • Shampoo – $3.34

Total: $37.60

Total for the week: $70.50

I’m glad my total wasn’t too bad despite the sale not applying. That could have been bad. Always check your receipts!

Meal Plan:

Last week without a meal plan went really well actually. After buying all the food I had a loose meal plan in mind, and we ate really well. Last week’s post has been updated with the meals I ended up making.

Grocery Shopping and Meal Plan – June 13

I went a little bit off plan this week. I totally forgot to make a meal plan before going to the store, so I decided to just wing it and buy what was on sale. I ended up spending a bit more than normal, but we have a lot of food, and good food. I decided to be creative this week.

Total for the week: $91.15

I didn’t have a plan for the week but buying exclusively on sale, I saved $34 on all of this. While I spent way more than I usually do, a lot of it was stocking up and will save us money in subsequent weeks.

Meal plan:

No meal plan this week. I made shrimp and rice on Sunday night and I plan to make crock pot fried chicken, and possibly an orange stir fry with tofu, turkey burgers and a sausage dish. We’ll see how it all works out.

I planned for healthier snacks this week too. I bought the hummus to go with the carrots, and the eggs to hard boil for snacks. My husband will eat the protein snacks and the granola bars because they’re easy to take to work as well as the grapes.

Resulting meal plan:
