Fashion Friday – Minimalism

I’d love to be a minimalist.

I get so jealous when I see capsule wardrobe pictures on Pinterest or see 30X30 challenges where people make so many outfits out of so little clothing.

I grew up in a cluttered house, my parents never got rid of anything. Now that I have an apartment, I don’t have a lot of stuff and we have a lot of glorious empty space. I still wish I had less, better quality clothing. I hold on to a lot of clothing even if I don’t wear a lot of it for whatever reason, like a gorgeous top I found at Savers. It’s silky and a beautiful turquoise color, but the static cling is insane. Plus it’s just too fancy for everyday wear.

Sometimes I wish I could go back in time to back-to-school shopping for clothes, when we’d buy a whole new school wardrobe that could be mixed and matched with everything else. Of course, back then all of my clothes were under $10 a piece too. Having a mature, coordinating wardrobe usually means shelling out money for quality pieces.

For now my plan is to figure out what I really need and what can replace the items of clothing I don’t wear with equally attractive pieces that I will wear. Like finding a little black dress to replace the adorable but odd one I found at Goodwill years ago and never wear, but keep around in case of funerals. In a lot of cases, it’s not a question of “I spent so much money on this so I should keep it,” but just feeling like I’d have a hole in my wardrobe if I got rid of it.

Are there articles of clothing you have a hard time parting with? Do you have a capsule wardrobe? Do you wish you had one?
